How the index works

Thermal part: boundary layer depth (1,500 ft = 0, 6,500 ft = full), cut by low cloud, rain chance and high CAPE. Ridge part (ridge sites only): 850 hPa wind 12 to 35 kt within 40 degrees of the ridge's working direction. Index = the better of the two. It is a rough sort.
